Situated in the heart of prime bear habitat, Sudbury district is known province wide for its dense bear populations. Moose Mountain sits on the northern rim of the Sudbury Basin where the Great Lakes forest of hardwoods, pine and spruce offer all the needed food and cover to maintain these healthy populations.
Farmlands of the nearby basin producing grain and berry crops further enhance their diets. In 2001, the vast tracts of Inco and Falconbridge Mining lands bordering just to the south of the BMA was closed to hunting. This closure of over 300 sq. miles has created a huge park-like land base where bears have thrived without predation from humans. These factors combined have resulted in creating the most incredible hunting opportunities for black bears in Ontario. |
